Violinist

About Ashley Cai
From an early age, I’ve been musically inclined. Inspired by my older sister, I took it upon myself to learn piano from the age of three. As I grew up, I developed a specific interest in the violin. As a result, my fascination for classical music expanded and I started to play with groups ranging in size. I became particularly interested in exploring contemporary music with my chamber group, prompting a passion for this area, which continued developing for the next decade. Whilst this encouraged me to explore different genres of music, solo performances allow me to be more expressive and creative in my individuality. I have consistently devoted myself to six hours of practice every day over several years, while pursuing my academic career and other extracurricular interests. From the age of eleven, I have had the privilege of studying individually under the direct tutelage of world renowned Joel Smirnoff, who personally sought to mentor me, complemented by the tutelage of other luminaries like Lucie Robert. I strongly believe that it’s essential to have fun whilst making music that one finds exciting. Personally, performing classical music isn’t just a passion, it’s a way to honor tradition that has shaped our world musically and culturally. As an artist, I remain convinced that it is my duty to contribute my time to the development of this genre, especially as classical music isn’t as popular today amongst the younger generations.
